July 2, 2008
  • Chad Winterfeldt will present an organ recital in the summer recital series at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson on Wednesday, July 2nd at 12 o’clock noon. Dr. Winterfeldt is Director of Music at First Lutheran Church in Saint Peter and Associate Organist at Christ Chapel and Director of Handbells at Gustavus Adolphus College. The concert is free and the public is welcome. Tickets for the salad and sandwich buffet at 12:30 are $6 for adults and $2 for children under twelve.

  • Meeker County Public Transit will be closed on Friday, July 4th.  People need to make weekend reservations for rides by Thursday, July 3rd at 5 p.m.  Call 693-7794.
July 6, 2008
  • The annual “4th of July” celebration in Spicer includes a flea market, pony rides and petting zoo July 4th and 5th, kiddie parade at 9:30 on the 4th, followed by the grand day parade at 10:30, New London-Spicer Community Band concert at 7:30 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m.  The street dance will be at 8 p.m. on the 5th, and the Green Lake Road Race is on July 6th at 7 a.m., followed by a church service on the beach at 10:30.
  • A family golf outing is scheduled for Sunday, July 6th at the Litchfield Golf Club.  Children can golf for free with a paid adult.  There will be food and prizes.  To schedule a tee time, call the Pro Shop at 693-6059.
  • Beckville Lutheran Church of Litchfield and First Lutheran Church of Cosmos are having a Joint worship service on Sunday, July 6th at 10 a.m. at Beckville Picnic grounds with a potluck dinner following. EVERYONE’S WELCOME!

  • Heartland Community Action Agency will offer Home Stretch classes on July 15th and 22nd from 1-to-5 at the Kandiyohi County Family Services Building.  The fee is $35 per household.  To register before the class dates, call toll-free 1-800-992-1710.

  • The Rosendale Methodist Church, south of Atwater, has its ice cream social on Tuesday, July 8th from 4-to-8 p.m.  The menu includes bar-b-ques, ham sandwiches, potato salad, beans, pie, cake, ice cream and beverages.  Everyone’s welcome.

  • The Litchfield Christian Women’s Club brunch is on Friday, July 11th at First Lutheran Church from 9-to-10:30 a.m.  Steve Dick will do the special feature on how a service dog can be the arms and legs of a wheelchair-bound man.  Shirley Weinzetl will provide special music, and Janet Gerjets of Brookings, South Dakota will be the special speaker.  Janet is the membership coordinator for South Dakota public broadcasting and will talk about overcoming panic attacks.  Children 5 years and up are invited.  It’s free for 5-year-olds.  It’s $5 for children 6-to-12, $6 for children 13-to-16, and $7 for adults.  Brunch and nursery reservations need to be made by noon on July 9th.  Call Vila at 593-2964 or Donna Jean at 593-8680.
  • A Pie and Ice Cream Social will be held on Wednesday, July 9th from 4:30-to-7 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church of rural Cosmos.  The menu will include Salads, Sandwiches, Fruit, Vegetables and Dip, Pie, Ice Cream, Coffee and Milk.

  • The July 10th “Pie in the Park” will benefit Crackerjack Nursery School.  Food will be served from 5-to-8 p.m.  Stan’s Country Dutchmen will be performing.
  • The Hutchinson Area Bird Club Meeting will be on July 10th at 7 p.m. in the Hutchinson Public Library basement.  Anyone interested in birding is welcome.
  • Meeker-McLeod-Sibley Community Health Services will hold its quarterly Community Health Board Meeting on Thursday, July 10th from 9-to-11. The meeting will be held at the McLeod County Solid Waste Management Facility, Large Meeting Room, at 1065 5th Avenue Southeast in Hutchinson.  The meeting is open to the public.
  • A flag dedication will be held in South Grove Square in Grove City on Thursday, July 10th at 2 p.m.  Lunch will be served and everyone’s welcome.
  • The Litchfield Caregiver Discussion Group will meet on Thursday, July 10th at 1 p.m. at the Litchfield Public Library.  The topic this month will be “guilt.”  For more information, call Jan at 320-222-9271.
  • The Crow River Chapter of NARFE will meet on Thursday, July 10th at 6 p.m. at the Bonfire Bar and Grill – south of Litchfield on Highway 22.  All current and retired Federal employees are welcome.

  • St. John’s CCW Ice Cream Social is on Friday, July 11th from 4:30-to-7 at St. John’s Education Center – on Highway 12 between Dassel and Cokato.  They will serve barbeques, potato salad, chips, homemade pies and ice cream for a freewill donation.
  • The Litchfield High School Class of 1988 invites teachers to their class reunion on Friday, July 11th from
    6:30-to-7:30 at Peter’s on Lake Ripley.

  • The Threads of Hope 3rd Anniversary celebration is on Saturday, July 12th.  The store will have extended hours that day – from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Food will be served from 11-to-1:30 with free hot dogs, cookies and juice, and there will be a $10 bag sale.
  • The Library Public Library will be part of the Litchfield Block Party during Watercade, on Saturday, July 12th from 10-to-4.  There will be a book sale – with lots of videos, newer hard covers, and items never before seen.  The Library is also celebrating Pioneerland's 25th Anniversary, so come in and see their display.
  • Meeker County Public Transit will have bus service between Central Park and Memorial Park during the Litchfield Watercade celebration on Saturday, July 12th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The ride is one-dollar – or free if you’re wearing a Watercade button.  Buttons will be for sale on the bus.  The bus will go back and forth every half hour from the east side of Central Park – across from the Episcopal Church – to the Northwest corner of the Lake Ripley parking lot.

  • The White Squirrel Festival is being celebrated July 12th and 13th in Plato.  Saturday’s events include a silent auction and book sale, classic car and antique tractor show, a pork chop dinner from 4-to-7, and a lawn tractor competition.  Sunday’s activities include a church service, an omelet brunch, kiddie parade at 12:30, duck races and more.  For more information, call 238-2370.
  • The Red and White Dairy Cattle Association will have a picnic at the Manannah Valley Farm at 58253 360th Street – just north of Manannah on Sunday, July 13th from 1 p.m. until the late evening.  There will be picnic food during the day and a hog roast in the evening.  There will be a silent auction, speakers, judging classes throughout the day and more.  For directions or for more information, call 453-6623.
  • A 9-hole golf scramble will be held to benefit the Ron Christensen Family on Sunday, July 27th at the Litchfield Golf Club at 2 p.m.  The cost is $40 for golf, a picnic and a t-shirt, or $10 for just the picnic at Lions Shelter on Lake Ripley.  The picnic is free for kids under 10.  There will be a silent auction, fun and games and a hole-in-one contest.  Ron is a 1980 Litchfield High School graduate, son of Bruce and Jean Christensen, lives in Waconia and is battling cancer.  To make reservations for golf by July 13th, call Tom at

  • Summer Vacation Book Club – for students in grades 3-to-6 – will meet on Tuesday, July 15th from 3:30-to-4:30 p.m. at the Litchfield Public Library.
  • Children of all ages are invited to Chef Roberto’s Magical Cooking Show on Tuesday, July 15th from 3-to-4 p.m. at the Litchfield Public Library.  The show includes crazy cookery, magic and books.  The Litchfield Early Childhood Initiative is sponsoring the event.
  • Immanuel Lutheran Church of Atwater will have a fundraiser on Tuesday, July 15th at Papa Murphy’s Pizza in Willmar.  A percentage of the sales that day will help support a mission trip coordinated by the church.
  • The 2008 Meeker County 4-H Public Fashion Review will be held on Tuesday, July 15th at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield at 7 p.m. This event has been planned with the help of the Katie Hulterstrum Family.  The theme for this event is “Step into Style”.  It is a shoe theme.  Everyone’s welcome.  Fashion Review judging winners will be awarded following the review.

  • The Zion Salad Luncheon at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield will be on Thursday, July 17th in the Crossroads Room from 11-to-1.  It’s $6 and everyone’s welcome.  Thrivent funds have been applied for.

  • St. John Lutheran School has a hog roast and silent auction on Friday, July 18th from 5-to-8 p.m. in the Atwater Community Center.  They’ll serve grilled roast pork, baked beans, Cole slaw, potato salad, rolls and ice cream.  It’s $8 for adults, $5 for children 6-to-11 and free for children 5 and under.  Supplemental funds by Thrivent chapters 31307 and 31309.  The silent auction will feature Minnesota Gopher tickets, home made items, gift baskets, gift certificates and more.
  • The Meeker County American Dairy Association has its annual Cheesburger Days coming up Thursday, July 17th and Friday, July 18th from 11-to-2 each day at the Form-A-Feed Country Store in Litchfield.
July 19, 2008
  • The 24th annual Quilt Auction at the Green Lake Bible Camp in Spicer will include a barbeque supper, silent auction, quilt review and craft and country store on Friday, July 18th from 5:30-to-8:30 p.m.  The quilt review, craft and country store and silent auction will continue on Saturday, July 19th from 9-to-11:30.  There’s a hog roast from 11:30-to-1:30 and the quilt auction at 12:30 on Saturday, July 19th.  Supplemental funds applied for through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter 31307.  The Green Lake Bible Camp is two miles east of Spicer – on Green Lake.
  • The Willmar Mustangs semi-pro football team will take on the Fargo/Moorhead Liberty on Saturday, July 19th at 5 p.m. at the ACGC High School football field in Grove City.  The Mustangs will be playing in Olivia on July 26th – also at 5 p.m.
  • The Litchfield Public Library’s Jane Austen Book Club will be meeting on Saturday, July 19th at 10 a.m.  The members have been having a great time so far.  Everyone’s welcome.
July 20, 2008
  • A fundraiser will be held for Nancy Jankovsky of Litchfield on Sunday, July 20th from 4:30-to-7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Grove City.  A barbeque supper will be served and members of Cornerstone Church have set up a huge clothing sale.  Nancy and her family are moving to Wyoming where she will attend a Bible college and pursue a career in women’s counseling.

  • The Atwater Area Living-at-Home Block Nurse Program has its annual Charity Golf Tournament at Island Pine Golf Club on Monday July 21st.  Registration is at noon with a 4-person, shotgun start beginning at 1 p.m.  Registration is $50 per player which includes 18-holes of golf with a cart, prizes and a picnic dinner.  Call Island Pines at 974-8600 to register.  Proceeds will go to the block nurse program.  Supplemental funds applied for through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter 31307.

  • Father David Smith from the University of St. Thomas will present his experience on a peace team in the Middle East at St. Philip’s Church in Litchfield on Thursday, July 24th at 7 p.m.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME.  Refreshments will be served.
  • The Grove City Area Historical Society will meet on Thursday, July 24th at 7 p.m. at the museum at 205 3rd Street South in Grove City.  The District 23 School will be discussed.  There will be reminiscing and refreshments.  Everyone’s welcome.

  • Nominations are being accepted for the Meeker County out-standing senior citizen volunteers of the year.  Nominees must be at least 65 by August 1st.  The seniors will be honored at the Meeker County Fair on August 1st.  Return your nominations to Donna Whitcomb by July 25th.  Forms are available in the Meeker County Public Transit Office at 218 North Holcombe Avenue.  Call Donna Whitcomb for more information at 1-800-669-6714.

  • The Atwater Angels Breast Cancer Fundraiser is on Saturday, July 26th from 10-to-2 in the Atwater Community Center.  There will be a silent auction, bake sale, numerous home-party-sales vendors, chair massages and door prizes.  All funds go to the 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk.
  • A memorial ride will be held for 3 Minnesota soldiers who died in Iraq.  The motorcycle ride will start at the American Legion in Willmar at 10:30 am on July 26th - with sign up at 8 am - and it will go 150-miles - ending in Redwood Falls between 5 and 6 pm.  There will be a noon meal and an evening meal with a D-J.  The cycles will arrive shortly after noon at the VFW in Litchfield.  People are encouraged to wave flags from Central Park on Sibley Ave.
July 27, 2008
  • A benefit will be held on Sunday, July 27th from noon-to-6 at the Darwin Rod and Gun Club for Darrick Schmidt.  There will be a silent auction, meat raffle, food, drinks and music.  Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo bank.  If you have items to donate for the silent auction, call Sharon at 320-212-7050 or Terri at 320-221-0605.  Darrick fell while climbing up to his tree stand, broke his neck and is now paralyzed.
  • A benefit will be held for Ron Christensen at the Lions Shelter on Lake Ripley.  A golf tournament gets started at 3 p.m., with registration at 2 o’clock.  There’s a picnic lunch at the Lions Shelter for $10.  There will also
    be a silent auction, kids games and more.  In case of rain, the event will move to the Litchfield VFW.  Ron graduated from Litchfield High School in 1980 and has been battling colon cancer.
  • Zion Lutheran Church has its Potluck Share-a-Meal on Sunday, July 27th at 5:30.  Bring a dish to share with others who don’t have food to spare.
  • The Eden Valley Sportsman’s Club annual Barbequed Chicken and Smoked Pork Chop Dinner will be on Sunday, July 27th from 11-to-3 at Sportsman’s Club Park on Browns Lake.  Refreshments and take-out orders will also be available.  A meat raffle will be held during dinner.  Gun raffle winners will be drawn at 3 p.m.

  • “Music at the Darwin Twine Ball” for Monday, July 28th at 7 p.m. will feature storyteller and entertainer Harlan Anderson.  Come and relive memories of Darwin at the Twine Ball Museum July 28th at 7 p.m.
  • The regular meeting of the Daughters of Isabella will be on Monday, July 28th at 1:15 in the St. Philip’s Church Social Hall.  There will be a speaker on the Hospice program.

  • Toddler Time at the Litchfield Public Library Wednesdays from 10:15-to-10:45 a.m.  It’s for babies and toddlers from birth to age 2 – accompanied by a caregiver.  The dates are June 11th, 18th and 25th and July 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.
  • An ice cream social will be held at United Methodist Church in Litchfield on Wednesday, July 30th from 4-to7 p.m.  The menu will include barbeques, salad, potato chips, pickles, coffee, lemonade, pie and ice cream.  The cost is $6 for adults, $3.50 for children under 12 and free for preschoolers.  There will be music, air-conditioning, and proceeds will go to missions.

  • Family Story Hour at the Litchfield Public Library Thursday evenings at the Litchfield Public Library from 7-to-7:45 p.m.  The dates this summer are June 12th, 19th and 26th and, July 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.
  • Fun with 4-H at the Litchfield Public Library for students in grades K-through-5 on Thursdays this summer from 3:30-to-4:30 p.m.  The dates are June 12th, 19th and 26th and July 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.
  • The former rural teachers reunion will be on Thursday, July 31st at noon in the Viking Room at Emmaus Place.  Call Ruby Lien at 693-2033 or Fran Lupfer at 693-6031 if you plan to attend.
