July 21, 2008
  • The Atwater Area Living-at-Home Block Nurse Program has its annual Charity Golf Tournament at Island Pine Golf Club on Monday July 21st.  Registration is at noon with a 4-person, shotgun start beginning at 1 p.m.  Registration is $50 per player which includes 18-holes of golf with a cart, prizes and a picnic dinner.  Call Island Pines at 974-8600 to register.  Proceeds will go to the block nurse program.  Supplemental funds applied for through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter 31307.
  • The McLeod County Historical Society's Genealogy Society meeting will b on July 21st at 5 pm at the museum in Hutchinson which is located at 380 School Road NW.  For more information, call 587-2100 or go to www.mcleodhistory.org.
  • Tickets for “Annie” will be sold beginning Thursday, June 26th.  The performance will be in the Litchfield High School Little Theater July 18th and 19th at 7:30, July 20th at 2 p.m. and July 24th, 25th and 26th at 7:30 p.m.   All seats are reserved.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children and students.  Purchase tickets in person at Litchfield Community Education at 114 North Holcombe Avenue or on the phone with your Visa or Master Card at 693-2354.

  • Fidelity Chapter #17 – Order of the Eastern Star – will have a potluck supper at Ohland’s cottage on Lake Minnie Belle on Tuesday, July 22nd.  Meet at the Masonic Hall in Litchfield at 5:30 to pool rides.
July 23, 2008
  • The Beckville Ice Cream Social will be on Wednesday, July 23rd at the Beckville Picnic Grounds on Lake Minnie Belle from 4:30-to-7 p.m.  The menu includes barbeques, ham sandwiches, potato salad, beans, pickles, pie, ice cream, coffee and lemonade. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children 6-to-12 and free for children 5 and under.  In case of rain, it will be at Beckville Church.  Everyone’s welcome.  Matching funds applied for through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Branch # 31309.
July 24, 2008
  • Father David Smith from the University of St. Thomas will present his experience on a peace team in the Middle East at St. Philip’s Church in Litchfield on Thursday, July 24th at 7 p.m.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME.  Refreshments will be served.
  • The Grove City Area Historical Society will meet on Thursday, July 24th at 7 p.m. at the museum at 205 3rd Street South in Grove City.  The District 23 School will be discussed.  There will be reminiscing and refreshments.  Everyone’s welcome.

  • Nominations are being accepted for the Meeker County out-standing senior citizen volunteers of the year.  Nominees must be at least 65 by August 1st.  The seniors will be honored at the Meeker County Fair on August 1st.  Return your nominations to Donna Whitcomb by July 25th.  Forms are available in the Meeker County Public Transit Office at 218 North Holcombe Avenue.  Call Donna Whitcomb for more information at 1-800-669-6714.

  • The Atwater Angels Breast Cancer Fundraiser is on Saturday, July 26th from 10-to-2 in the Atwater Community Center.  There will be a silent auction, bake sale, numerous home-party-sales vendors, chair massages and door prizes.  All funds go to the 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk.
  • A memorial ride will be held for 3 Minnesota soldiers who died in Iraq.  The motorcycle ride will start at the American Legion in Willmar at 10:30 am on July 26th - with sign up at 8 am - and it will go 150-miles - ending in Redwood Falls between 5 and 6 pm.  There will be a noon meal and an evening meal with a D-J.  The cycles will arrive shortly after noon at the VFW in Litchfield.  People are encouraged to wave flags from Central Park on Sibley Ave.
July 27, 2008
  • A benefit will be held on Sunday, July 27th from noon-to-6 at the Darwin Rod and Gun Club for Darrick Schmidt.  There will be a silent auction, meat raffle, food, drinks and music.  Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo bank.  If you have items to donate for the silent auction, call Sharon at 320-212-7050 or Terri at 320-221-0605.  Darrick fell while climbing up to his tree stand, broke his neck and is now paralyzed.
  • A benefit will be held for Ron Christensen at the Lions Shelter on Lake Ripley.  A golf tournament gets started at 3 p.m., with registration at 2 o’clock.  There’s a picnic lunch at the Lions Shelter for $10.  There will also
    be a silent auction, kids games and more.  In case of rain, the event will move to the Litchfield VFW.  Ron graduated from Litchfield High School in 1980 and has been battling colon cancer.
  • Zion Lutheran Church has its Potluck Share-a-Meal on Sunday, July 27th at 5:30.  Bring a dish to share with others who don’t have food to spare.
  • The Eden Valley Sportsman’s Club annual Barbequed Chicken and Smoked Pork Chop Dinner will be on Sunday, July 27th from 11-to-3 at Sportsman’s Club Park on Browns Lake.  Refreshments and take-out orders will also be available.  A meat raffle will be held during dinner.  Gun raffle winners will be drawn at 3 p.m.

  • “Music at the Darwin Twine Ball” for Monday, July 28th at 7 p.m. will feature storyteller and entertainer Harlan Anderson.  Come and relive memories of Darwin at the Twine Ball Museum July 28th at 7 p.m.
  • The regular meeting of the Daughters of Isabella will be on Monday, July 28th at 1:15 in the St. Philip’s Church Social Hall.  There will be a speaker on the Hospice program.

  • Toddler Time at the Litchfield Public Library Wednesdays from 10:15-to-10:45 a.m.  It’s for babies and toddlers from birth to age 2 – accompanied by a caregiver.  The dates are June 11th, 18th and 25th and July 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.
  • An ice cream social will be held at United Methodist Church in Litchfield on Wednesday, July 30th from 4-to7 p.m.  The menu will include barbeques, salad, potato chips, pickles, coffee, lemonade, pie and ice cream.  The cost is $6 for adults, $3.50 for children under 12 and free for preschoolers.  There will be music, air-conditioning, and proceeds will go to missions.

  • Family Story Hour at the Litchfield Public Library Thursday evenings at the Litchfield Public Library from 7-to-7:45 p.m.  The dates this summer are June 12th, 19th and 26th and, July 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.
  • Fun with 4-H at the Litchfield Public Library for students in grades K-through-5 on Thursdays this summer from 3:30-to-4:30 p.m.  The dates are June 12th, 19th and 26th and July 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st.
  • The former rural teachers reunion will be on Thursday, July 31st at noon in the Viking Room at Emmaus Place.  Call Ruby Lien at 693-2033 or Fran Lupfer at 693-6031 if you plan to attend.

  • Preschool Story Hour and More is offered at the Litchfield Public Library Fridays from 10-to-11 a.m.  The dates are June 13th, 20th and 27th, July 11th, 18th and 25th and August 1st.
  • Cornerstone Church in Litchfield is hosting the Living Proof Live 2008 Simulcast featuring Bible teacher Beth Moore August 1st from 6:30-to-9 p.m. and August 2nd from 8:30-to-noon.  Tickets are available at Cornerstone on Sunday mornings, or call the church for tickets or for more information at 593-7971.  The cost is $25.  Advanced payment is required and there are no refunds.
  • There will be a free show for children during the Meeker County Fair on Friday, August 1st.  Rockin’ Recess will be in the bandshell from 7-to-9 p.m. for children from pre-Kindergarten to 7th grade.  The show will combine props, music, dancing and fun contests.
  • Family Feud is returning to the Meeker County Fair on Friday, August 1st from 9-to-11 p.m.  Pre-register with Loree Schultz at the fair office before 4 p.m. on August 1st.

  • Two employees at American Time & Signal in Dassel are participating in the 3-Day breast cancer walk in the Twin Cities in September.  A fundraising event will be held at Thirsty’s Tavern in Dassel on August 2nd with entertainers Jessi Campbell, Elle Kay and Linda Bieza at 7:30 p.m.  $15 tickets are available at Thirsty’s Tavern or call 275-2751.
  • A Scholastic Book Fair will be held at the Meeker County Fair on Saturday, August 2nd on Saturday, August 2nd from 10-to-5.  There will be a variety of books and other items for sale for children up to 8th grade.
  • The next book sale at the Litchfield Public Library will be during Crazy Days, on Saturday, August 2nd. 
August 3, 2008
  • The 2nd annual Autocross is at the Meeker County Fair Grandstand on Sunday, August 3rd at 2 p.m.  To enter a car or for more information, call Jon at 320-275-3965.
  • The Meeker County Fair will be open from July 31st to August 3rd.  All American Amusements will have rides.  Armbands will be sold August 1st from 6-to-8 p.m. and August 3rd from 1-to-4 p.m.
  • You can support 4-H by purchasing a cookbook put together by the Kimball Kruisers.  The cookbooks will be available for sale during the Meeker County Fair.
  • The Litchfield Masons will once again have their Kids I-D booth at the Meeker County Fair at the Sheriff’s Building on the west side of the fair grounds.  Parents will receive a free Kids I-D kit.

  • St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Litchfield has a Vacation Bible School program called “Soaring High” on Wednesday, August 6th from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The children will have a cookout dinner with their parents at 5:30.  It’s for children from age 4 up through those entering the 6th grade.  You can either register the morning of August 6th, or pre-register, or get more information by calling the church at 593-6324.

  • The 17th Annual Darwin Twine Ball Celebration is Saturday, August 9th with a craft fair at 9 a.m., sand volleyball at 9, kids pedal pull at 10, a parade at 12:30, the Minnesota Minn-e-Rods at 2:30, a barbeque pork chop dinner from 4-to-7, music in the park from 7-to-11:30 p.m. featuring Backroads, a raffle drawing for cash prizes at 8:30 p.m., food stands and more.  The Darwin Pictorial Museum will be open from 10-to-5.

  • The 5th annual St. Philip’s Bazaar Car Show will be on Sunday, August 10th at the Meeker County Fairgrounds in Litchfield.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the south gate.  For more information about the car show, call Don at 693-3164 or Jim at 693-6442.  The Bazaar will include a worship service at 10, food, games, bingo, a silent auction, beer garden, pull tabs and more.
  • The 2008 St. Philip’s Bazaar is Sunday, August 10th from 10-to-5 at the Meeker County Fairgrounds.  The outdoor mass is at 10, with a turkey dinner from 11-to-2, Texas Hold ‘Em at noon, kids games, country store, silent auction, pull tabs, cash raffle and much more.

  • The 20th annual Forest City Threshers Show is August 16th and 17th – from 8-to-5 each day.  Oliver Hart Parr will be the featured equipment.  There’s a parade each day at 1 p.m., breakfast from 8-to-9:30, a roast beef dinner from 11-to-2, antique tractor pull after the parade on Saturday, a kids pedal pull on Sunday at 2:30, a craft and flee market, a cash prize raffle, live music, demonstrations and more.  It’s $4 for adults – or $7 for a 2-day pass and free for children 12 and under.
